We’ve all heard the Lord’s Prayer being spoken – maybe at school or at church. Some of us have even memorised it. The words roll effortlessly off our tongues while, often, the true meaning fails to connect with our hearts. Have you ever stopped to think about how the Lord’s Prayer is a model for how we should be praying – every day? Have you considered how it can be applied to your life and your relationship with the living God? We don’t need to say the Lord’s Prayer word for word to be able to communicate with Him. It’s not a magic incantation or a rigid rule. It’s a guideline for worshipping Him in a right way; standing in awe of His greatness, power and grace – and being acutely aware of our own failings and tendencies to slip up.

We are often very traditionalist in how we think things need to be worded. For instance, there are some who believe that the King James Version of the Bible is the only ‘acceptable’ translation – and that anything written in a more modern style is wrong. I disagree. Language is adaptable and forever changing. We are constantly communicating in new, innovative ways (take this post, for example!) and we need to be culturally appropriate in our teaching. It is important to remember, however, that God’s word never changes. That is the all-important bottom line.

I love seeing things in a new light. When somebody puts a fresh spin on something you’ve taken for granted – it completely changes your perception. I’m not saying truth should be altered. Truth is truth. But when you look at it from a different angle, you begin to appreciate the intricacies of it. This is why I love what the Skit Guys do. They take something which could be seen as stale and familiar, and made it fresh and challenging. When you step out of your comfort zone, the Bible speaks to you in ways you never thought it could, and your relationship with God changes for the better.

Look at how they have revamped the Lord’s Prayer:

“God you are greater than anything this world has to offer and I can’t wait for you to come back and get us. But until that time comes, would you just help me just to live my life day after day as if I’m just walking hand in hand with you.

God I have a lot of needs and I have a lot of wants. Sometimes I get those things confused. Help me to just trust you to meet my needs, and be thankful when you give me those other things that I just want.

God I’ve blown it so many times today, and I’m sorry. Thank you for your forgiveness, I don’t take it for granted. And God as I start this day out, I’m just reminded that this world is filled with so many spiritual potholes, please help me to walk in such a way where I won’t stumble so much.

And as I’m going through this day God, help me to live my life in such a way that will bring you glory and honour. May the life that I live be a life of worship to you. Amen.”

This ‘revamp’ is from the Skit Guys’ video: “The Skinny on Prayer”

Don’t recognise it? Have a look at Matthew 6:9-13 and break down each sentence. Really look at what it means. This is how Jesus wants us to pray, every day. Not just because we’ve memorised it, or because we have to recite it occasionally at church, but because we truly want to worship Him, and want to grow to be more like him day by day.
